Preparing Future-Ready Students Through the International School Advantage

Dr. Amanda Sunderman
Director
Spring is the time of year when many parents and families begin thinking ahead to the fall and considering the right school environment for their children. I believe there is space for all types of schools to exist, as different programs offer different approaches to meet the diverse needs of families.
This article focuses on non-profit international schools and the unique role they play in preparing students for the future. While there are many definitions of “future ready,” a simple way to think about it in education is this: students who are equipped with adaptability, critical thinking, technological literacy, and resilience to navigate a rapidly changing world (OECD, 2018).
What makes international schools distinct is not only what students learn, but how they learn, through daily experiences in a diverse, global community. It is this environment that helps develop the skills, perspectives, and mindsets students need to thrive in the future.
At the American International School of Vilnius, we focus on the whole child. From activities like Super Gym and inquiry-based research projects in the Lower School, to Upper School students competing in academic and athletic competitions across Europe, obtaining high scores on the International Baccalaureate Diploma exam, and entering top universities, our students are prepared to adapt, think critically, access and leverage technology, and demonstrate the resilience needed to overcome challenges. AISV students are future ready.
But there is something more happening at the American International School of Vilnius, and it makes all the difference in future readiness.
We have a school culture where every member belongs, and the diversity of our backgrounds is our strength. We see each member of our community as an essential part of who we are, and you can feel this the moment you step onto campus. Students who have a positive sense of belonging are more likely to have higher levels of well-being, academic motivation, connection to school, and university success (Sunderman, 2025).
On a daily basis, our students interact with peers and teachers from all over the world (25 nationalities and counting). We come together from different backgrounds, socioeconomic experiences, cultures, religions, and value systems, and we find common ground in our mission to Connect, Inspire, and Empower our students. Our diversity is our strength, every student belongs, and every day our students are developing the academic, social, emotional, and cultural intelligence needed to thrive in a global community.
So, as you consider which school will best prepare your child for the future, the life skills and future-ready foundation found at the American International School of Vilnius stand out as a key difference.
